Drinco de Mayo
This Saturday is Cinco de Mayo (CdM), so don’t go out to eat on Sunday because the kitchen staff will be hung over. For those of you not in the know, which I can’t imagine there are many readers of this site that aren’t, CdM commemorates the Battle of Puebla where the Mexican army achieved an unlikely victory over the French. It is a day of Mexican pride, much like St Patricks Day where Guinness is drank and people eat corned beef, on CdM people drink Mexican beer (which they will order by asking for a cerveza) and eat at Chilis or On The Border.
I normally bitch about “Amateur Nights”, but as I have gotten older I learned to avoid them. Irish pubs on Cinco de Mayo and Mexican joints on St Patrick’s Day. It’s brilliant really. I’m kidding of course. I go to all of the same places I go to regardless of the night of the week or the holiday because I am not an Amateur, I’m a regular, so I do what I want, regularly.
Amateur night aside, we are fans of drinking beers that are themed around the holiday that it currently is. We drank Guinness on St Patrick’s Day, I will drink Tecate on Saturday, and on Memorial day, Flag day, and the 4th of July I hope Budweiser makes those USA Bud cans because I will drink those. Nothing says America more than drinking from a can with an American flag on it. When associating a beer with a holiday it only makes the holiday that much better and gives you that much more to look forward to.
What are some of your favorite beers to drink on certain holidays? One of my favs is Pumpkin Ale on (and around) Halloween.

Saturday I will review Tecate for No Philters, so be sure to check it out. Finally this is Brewery #97, so we are looking forward to #100 soon.

i thought Cinco de Mayo was Mexican Independence day? And unless it’s “National drink your own piss day” i will never drink Bud in a can, i don’t care how many American flags it has. Although i am Mexican and hate this country so that doesn’t really count i guess. Enjoy Chilli’s on Saturday honkeys!
I don’t know man… when you have an ice cold can of Budweiser in your hand, and it’s covered with that gorgeous red, white and blue… it tastes special. I don’t know if it’s the beechwood aging, but that first sip tastes like America.
If that comment had a “like” button, I’d click it.
The traditional American Summer Holidays (Memorial Day, 4th of July, Labor Day) are reserved for truly American beers. I prefer the American craft beers like Sam, Dogfish, and Sierra as opposed to the Dutch sellouts Budweiner. No… that is not a typo.
Your 100% right Dave. But summer is OF COURSE a time for cans and session beers. And unfortunately Dogfish Head and Sam don’t make cans. Sierra just started, but still not a summer beer if you ask me. But I am always open to suggestions…
I’m a fan of anything seasonal, timing is everything…sam adams does it well
I agree. Maybe I will swap some Buds out for some Sam Summer.
Seasonal Beers are incredible, and I will agree that Sam Adams has a solid handle on that market. But you should also keep an eye out for Shiner Bock, and their seasonals.
Winter – Holiday Cheer (You can thank me next Christmas when you try it.)
Spring – Dortmunder (Crisp, slightly sweet with a hoppy flavor.)
Summer – Ruby Redbird (I just got to sample this the other night at the bar I work at, and it’s an awesome Summer Beer. There’s a hint of Grapefruit, and a kick of Ginger. It’s almost like a shandy, but it maintains a beer flavor, and at 4.01%, you can drink 100 of them. Another one you can thank me for.)
OK, I forgot… I did a review of Bitter American from 21st Amendment. It comes in a can and it tastes fantastic. It also has American written right on the can. They are not the easiest to find in Jersey, but if you can, I highly recommend it. You can read my review here:

I wanted to thank you guys for a couple fun days at work. I’ve been filling the boredom with webcomics. Being a fellow beer lover, I’ve really enjoyed both the Brewery and HH. I live in Michigan and we have a lot of craft breweries popping up all over the state. My current favorite is Kewenaw Brewery – Widow Maker Black Ale. I would recommend it if you ever get the chance. Though, I have a hard enough time finding it where I live, as the brewery is 400 miles from me. Oh, and they only sell it in cans.
Thanks again for the laughs and future laughs. Also, now that the Wings are out of the playoffs – GO DEVILS!
Eric, thank you for the comment. We are glad we could keep you entertained through the mundane workday.
I’ll add Keweenaw to the “must find and drink” list. Hopefully we’ll see it at a beer convention soon.
The Brewery posts every Wednesday night, we’d love to keep hearing from you. Go Devils!
