A Football Fantasy
It’s that time of year again. In bars around the nation, people’s eyes will be glued to every TV in the joint on Thursday, Sunday, and Monday. That’s right, it’s time for fantasy football playoffs.
Making the playoffs and winning at fantasy football is a big deal. You can brag about it to your friends, family, co-workers, random people on the bus who don’t even like sports, or your Rabbi. Needless to say, it’s something to talk about.
With the playoffs on the line I headed out to my local Buffalo Wild Wings to watch the 1 o’clock games and have a few beers. I started with their in house brew “Game Changer” which is brewed by Redhook Brewery. Game Changer is a session ale with lots of flavor so it was a great way to start off my football Sunday. Then I switched to something a bit lighter which was a Pabst Blue Ribbon. I don’t know what it is, but I just really enjoy PBR from the tap, so I went with that over my normal light beer of choice, Bud Light.
After leaving B Dubs I was in a great place in my league and it looked like I would sneak into the playoffs. Considering 2 weeks ago I was in dead last, it was pretty amazing. I figured it would be fine to grab a few more beers over at General Poors in Hackensack. As the 4 o’clock games ended, it still looked like I would win… but then something strange happened.
A situation came up that I would guess doesn’t come up very often in Fantasy Football leagues. Earlier in the day a league member texted another league member that they wanted to make a lineup change but couldn’t make it themselves, this was at 12:30pm. The second person then texted the Commissioner, who saw the text later at night and decided to edit the lineup, which in turn screwed me. I immediately took to the message boards and began to run my mouth. This was probably because I had been drinking all day while watching football.
Anyway I had never seen something like this before and after much back and forth it was ruled invalid as even though the intention was there, the actual move had to reflect on time. Moral of the story, we are all responsible for our own teams at the end of the day. If you can’t be somewhere with reliable service, find someone reliable to make changes on time for you.
With the FF playoffs starting this week I will be sure that my lineup is set, by getting all of my favorite beers lined up in my fridge. I don’t want to be too far from home in case I need to make a last minute change.
